On September 6, 2025, the Wall Street Journal published an article with the sensational headline, “The Billionaires Fueling the Quest for Longer Life.”1 The article was accompanied by a picture of four men. The media coverage of investment in aging research often reinforces the narrative that wealthy men want to invest in such research in order to extend their own lives. The subtext of this narrative is that this investment is a kind of testosterone driven ego-stroke, taking money away from worthy causes such as cancer or Alzheimer’s research in order to pursue individual gain.
